Genesee County Park and Forest, Genesee County
I was very tempted to pick a corn field for my Genesee County painting after exploring the length and breadth of the county, but after talking to residents I was pointed toward Genesee County Park and Forest or the village of LeRoy. Since this outing was in October, I decided to capitalized on the fall colors. This particular location at the pond was suggested to me by Bernie, a volunteer at the Interpretive Nature Center within the Park.

Pigman Farm, Seneca County, NY
I spent the day wandering around Seneca Falls, NY trying to find the perfect place to paint, but it was pouring rain and grey. I decided to throw in the towel and head home, but on the way I saw a field glowing gold. I remember someone telling me that Seneca County's beauty was in its agriculture, so I knew I needed to stop at this magical field. I found out from the owner that this was a soybean field and that this farm, Pigman Farms, had been in his family for generations.

Round Lake at Green Lakes State Park, Onondaga County, NY
For this site, I didn't have any interviewees; instead I discovered in on the website Uncovering New York. I was enthralled at the idea of a meromictic lake and the fact that there are so few of them in the United States increased the park's appeal. I was directed toward Round Lake instead of the more populated Green Lake by a few hikers and so I tried my plein air hiking kit for the first time. Since the day was overcast I wasn't able to get quite as much of of the pond's magical qualities as I would have liked, but I was thrilled with the one little slice that was shielded from the day's clouds.
Hogsback Overlook in Letchworth State Park, Livingston County, NY
This dramatic view was recommended to me by the friendly folks in the Letchworth State Park Visitors Center. While I was working on this soft pastel piece, I talked with visitors from Maine, Conneticut, and Virginia. I also had the pleasure of meeting John Kucko, former Rochester-based TV anchor, turned photographer and videographer of all things grand in New York State and beyond. We talked about photo and video drones which inspired me to obtain one of my own. I am still learning how to fly it!
View from Three Sisters Island, Niagara County, NY
This was from an overcast day filled with lots of onlookers and other plein air artists. I joined the Niagara Frontier Plein Air Painters for the International Plein Air Painters Worldwide Paintout and thus got to work and lunch with about 15 other plein air artists. I sought to capture the bild and chaotic beauty of the the Niagara rapids; this was my first time working in soft pastels in over 15 years, and I immediately decided that I needed to work in the medium much more frequently!
